Literacy Leaders™
10-Minute Lessons for Phonological Awareness
by Sheila Clark-Edmands, M.Ed.
Ungraded

A student’s ability to achieve reading and spelling success is directly related to whether or not a child can perceive that words are made up of sounds and then be able to manipulate these sounds. This process is known as phonological awareness.

This easy-to-use manual:
Presents phonological awareness activities grouped by phoneme and difficulty
Presents targeted activities for 5-10 minutes a day
Serves as the perfect lead-in for phonics, reading or spelling lessons

Phonological awareness activities are arranged in order of developmental sequence—from simple rhyming to the complex substitution of final phonemes in words.

Rhyme: Providing • Categorization
Sound: Providing • Categorization
Blending: Compound Words • Syllables • Phonemes
Segmentation: Sentence • Syllables • Phonemes
Deletion: Compound Words • Syllables • Phonemes
Substitution: Syllables • Phonemes

The flexible format of Literacy Leaders makes it easy for teachers to select activities that are developmentally appropriate for students and lead them step-by-step through progressively complex phonemic manipulation.
