Wordly Wise 3000

I was first introduced to the Wordly Wise vocabulary program almost ten years ago! Having used the “old” series and the new 3000 program, I am convinced this publication is my most valuable tool in presenting vocabulary skills to my students. These tried and true lessons provide the foundations essential to building vocabulary variety and comprehension.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to share the benefits of Wordly Wise with new colleagues and parents. Consistently, they are amazed with the major growth made by students who use this series! I am always delighted when students see and hear the words in other situations and announce confidently “I know what that means. It’s a Wordly Wise word!” (When these words appear evenings on Jeopardy, we hear all about it in class the next day!)

When so many things in education seem to be changing, I continue to have confidence in this vocabulary series to support my students as they prepare for high stakes testing, SAT Prep, and AP requirements.

When I was a fifth grade teacher, I was looking for a tool to extend vocabulary with my students. When teaching word choice in writing, I very quickly realized that kids must have words to use words. My students struggled to capture the vocabulary necessary for success in writing. A friend of mine told me that she had used Wordly Wise 3000 when she was doing her student teaching, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered a class set and I have never looked back!

Now, as Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator for Imagine Schools, I recommend Wordly Wise 3000 to all of the schools I serve. This program not only teaches vocabulary very explicitly, but it also incorporates reading comprehension by providing a story with each lesson that uses the words in the context of a high-interest story. The tests are not rote memorization of words and definitions. Instead, they are actual application of each word in the form of a multiple choice exam. The web resources and audio CDs are just an added bonus.

Using Wordly Wise 3000 will not only improve a student's vocabulary, it will assist in improving both reading and critical thinking skills!

As a grade chair of our 3rd grade team, I have been very pleased with Wordly Wise 3000 books as a tool for teaching complete literacy to all students. We order 4th grade books for our AIG students and 3rd grade books for our regular education students which include ELL and LD students. The lessons are relatively simple to modify to allow for learning differences.

I particularly like that the Wordly Wise 3000 lessons address not only vocabulary, but also dictionary skills, grammar skills, spelling skills, and reading skills. The close exercises presented with each lesson present a challenging way for students to connect definition to context.

Thank you for continuing to produce such a useful tool for classroom literacy instruction.
